ALYSSA KIM, the winner of the NJIO Young Artist Concerto Competition, is a Juilliard Pre-College violin student from River Edge, NJ.
Just two years after writing Judas Maccabeus, Handel was asked to write more music in celebration of military victory; the end of the War of the Austrian Succession was celebrated with a great fireworks display in London in honor of the King, accompanied by suitably heroic music. The war is a small footnote to history, but the music composed for this Royal Fireworks display in all its brassy glory has lived on.
Haydn's last numbered Symphony was written for London as well-in fact; it is nicknamed the London Symphony. It shows Haydn in full maturity, writing, for the first time in his life, with full awareness that he was writing for posterity. Every bar is carefully crafted and written with the utmost attention to detail and it has been popular on concert programs from the day it was written.
COME EARLY and listen to NJIO's Prelude Ensemble, under the direction of conductor Robert Anderson.
